Posted by don on 2009/10/28 15:21:43 (408 reads)
Clivia caulescens

This is a picture of a new interspecific clivia that has flowered
recently. It is from our own breeding. It has Clivia caulescens in the
background.
We are calling it 'Sueshine' The flowers are larger than normal and
it is an ideal plant for breeding. Seed will be available in June
2010.

Clivia caulescens : Clivia caulescens - A Giant among Clivias

Clivia caulescens

Clivia caulescens which occurs in mountain forests of Mpumalanga ( North - Eastern RSA ) can reach a height of 1,5 to 2 metres. The larger plants often fall over rocks and become serpentine in nature.

They prefer damper, shaded, frost - free conditions and often grow in leaf litter on rocks. They differ from other clivias in that they develop long stems with aerial roots. They can flower throughout the year but the main flowering period is in Spring.
They are easy to grow as a garden plant in frost - free areas and germinate easily from seed.

Clivia robusta from Kwazulu Natal is another plant with a tall growth form often reaching 2 metres in height and I will discuss this plant in a later article.

Clivia caulescens

Clivia caulescens is similar to Clivia nobilis and Clivia gardenii. All have pendulous bell-like flowers. Clivia caulescens has a tall bamboo-like stem with aerial roots. Stems can be over one metre high. Clivia caulescens usually grows in rocky habitats with the aerial roots clinging to the rocks. These plants grow in montane forest in Mpumalanga (the old Eastern Transvaal) Cultivate Clivia caulescens in well-drained soil rich in leaf mould.
