The plant in the picture is producing new leaves which come out soft and later become harder and prickly as they mature. Encephalartos ferox makes an excellent accent plant in the garden and prefers light shade but will also grow in a morning sun position.

Perhaps you are thinking of landscaping your garden. We recomend cycads and indigenous plants for maximum impact and also for a water - wise garden.

Cycads

This is a view of the cycad Encephalartos lehmanii which is growing in a container near our pool.

It is prized in gardens for it's blue - grey leaves and does well in
containers. When it becomes too large for the container it can be
planted out in the garden. It will grow in full sun or even in a
morning sun position. The position seen in this photo is actually
morning sun and it thrives in well - drained garden soil with some
compost added.

This cycad will take lower temperatures than most cycad species and will tolerate light frost. A large variety of blue - grey cycads are available available.

Clivias : ALMOST WHITE CLIVIA

Clivias

The above plant flowered for us for the first time this spring. It is a cross between a cream Nakamura hybrid and our clivia nobilis 'Pearl of the Cape '. We were surprised at the light-coloured flowers and have named this plant ' White Cloud '.

White is a very rare and uncommon colour in clivias and true whites will fetch large sums of money especially in the Japanese and Chinese markets.

We have crossed this plant with a cream miniata hybrid in the hopes of breeding a pure white colour. It is developments like this that make clivia breeding an exciting and rewarding hobby.

Clivias : Miniature Clivias

The above two clivias also flowered for us this spring and it was interesting to note that both are interspecific crosses and both had smaller flowers. The first, which we named ‘Moon shine’, had flowers only 4.5 cm across and the plant itself was of a dwarf nature.

The second plant, which we have named ‘Yellow Midget’, is a cross between an Australian yellow miniata hybrid and a clivia nobilis. This plant had flowers just over 5 cm across with reflexed petals and the plant itself is of a dwarf nature.
Miniature clivias are important, as space in the Clivia House is often a problem.
We are looking forward to continue line - breeding these miniatures to meet future demands for plants that take up less space.

Posted by don on 2011/10/10 12:51:28 (285 reads)
Strelitzias

The Strelitzia is a beautiful ornamental plant with exotic flowers resembling a bird. These plants grow wild in the Eastern Cape and Kwazulu Natal in Southern Africa and will thrive in your garden in areas where it is frost - free.

Strelitzia reginae has broader leaves as distinct from Strelitzia juncea, which has sword - like leaves. Both have the same type of flower. In South Africa, it is known as the Crane Flower.

The flowers produce large quantities of nectar, which will attract sunbirds to your garden.

These plants are easy to grow and demand little or no attention.

They are easily grown from seed and fast - growing. This is a very important plant in the cut - flower industry.
